Strawberry time in South Florida

It is now PEAK SEASON for strawberries in South Florida. I've been noticing the local supermarket ads for large quantities of local strawberries at VERY REASONABLE prices.....4 quarts for $5.00! That will put up 14 jars of Strawberry Preserves!

I haven't grown my own strawberries here yet, but I hope to find a sunny spot in my yard for them. Meanwhile the supermarket supply of local berries will have to do while they are at a reasonable cost.

So being a bit short on time, I picked up only 2 quarts and made 7 jars of strawberry jam today - all for under $5.00 (including sugar and pectin)! When is the last time you bought a jar of Strawberry preserves at any grocer for less than $1.00? Hmmm? Can't wait for them to cool down enough to try a sample. YUMMY!!! They will be looking pretty in the pantry, but not for long - I guarantee you. Between eating it up and my tendency to give away my home made stuff, it won't be there but a week or so. Oh well. I'll just have to do it again, won't I?

When I pick up some more strawberries this week-end, I think I'l ready them for our favorite dessert - Strawberry Shortcake - and freeze up a few portions for a couple of months from now. What a treat!

That's it for now. That's what I was thinking about. Maybe I'll submit a couple more pictures and recipes in another blog.
